Southcoast Wind and Cumulative Impacts

The “Draft Environmental Impact Statement” for SouthCoast wind was just released. The document is a tale of environmental and economic damage to Nantucket. For the first time the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has included a cumulative analysis for the massive 1,600 square mile power plant being built off Nantucket’s coast. Our fears that a hurried and inadequate review of Vineyard Wind would open the floodgates to even larger scale, ill thought out development are being realized.

Please let state and local officials know that Nantucket’s pristine ecosystem is the basis of our culture, tourism and way of life. This is too much, too fast and simply too much of a burden for our small island economy.

  • We don’t want the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale displaced from its only known year round habitat.

  • We don’t want our water sullied with leaking oil, diesel fuel and other chemicals.

  • We don't want 10 million gallons per day of ocean water warmed to 90°F for cooling just one offshore substation.

  • We don’t want our dark skies to be compromised by eight plus years of 24/7 construction lighting, and 35 years of marine and aircraft lighting.

  • We don’t want THOUSANDS of helicopter trips per year for 35 years of operation and maintenance.
